AVMA Board of Directors Sees Historic Turnover – What It Means for Veterinary Leadership

Boardroom Image

The AVMA Board of Directors is undergoing one of the most significant leadership shifts in years. With four out of 15 voting board seats changing in 2025—a 27% turnover—this presents a rare and critical opportunity for AVMA members to shape the direction of the organization.

This shift includes three district director positions opening up alongside the President-Elect race, creating an opportunity for fresh leadership to influence AVMA’s future. Dr. Jim Weisman’s transition from his role as a volunteer on the AVMA Board of Directors to a staff leadership position within AVMA leaves a rare third district director open seat, expanding the opportunity for change.

Which Districts Are Affected?

The three district director positions up for election represent the following states:

  • District 3 – Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee
  • District 5 – Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, West Virginia
  • District 6 – Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin

If you reside in one of these states, this is your opportunity to nominate yourself or another qualified candidate to fill one of these important board seats. Leadership at AVMA should reflect the needs and aspirations of its members, and now is the time to get involved.

Why the 2025 AVMA Elections Matter

Leadership transitions of this scale don’t happen often. A 27% change in the voting board means fresh perspectives, new priorities, and an opportunity to rethink AVMA’s future.

✅ More candidates = more voices, more ideas, and stronger representation.
✅Elections should be competitive. Contested races create healthy discussions, transparency, and engagement in our profession’s most influential organization.
✅ This is the time to step up. If you’ve ever wanted AVMA to evolve in a certain direction, now is the moment to be part of that change.

What About the President-Elect Race?

This year, the AVMA President-Elect election is contested—which is a great thing for the association. I’m running in this race because I believe in the power of engaged leadership, collaboration, and the strength of AVMA’s future.

📢 AVMA members: Your voice matters. Contact your AVMA delegate and encourage them to vote for Jen Quammen for AVMA President-Elect. Leadership should reflect the needs and aspirations of its members, and now is the time to get involved.
